Our brain is made of 3 distinct and interactive brain regions:
- Your Primitive or Reptilian brain helps you adapt to the world and is focused on gathering data to help you survive.
If this “brain” is your dominant force, it will be hard to relax, calm down and sleep properly.
You will be probably anxious and at least hyperalert for the “wild tiger” lurking in your backyard. You may have changes in your physiology to help you respond to the” battle” like blood pressure/blood sugar changes, stress hormone depletion and a shift in your autonomic nervous system towards “Sympathetic Dominance”.
It helps you survive but it’s not a comfortable place…..
- Your Limbic brain is also part of your unconscious brain and forms the link between your higher functions and aspirations and your survival brain.
This is where we relate to the external world with our emotional expression, experience and memory. It’s also where we relate to the world through our immune responses. The growth and repair of our cells rely heavily on healthy, efficient and integrated Limbic Brain.
If we are “stuck” here, we are often unhappy and unwell….
- The cortical Brain is your higher brain system. It forms a series of interactive networks that provide us with our creative, advanced learning and reasoning self.
It forms our consciousness and has an effect of turning down our survival and relating systems to ensure calm, ease and efficiency in our body chemistry.
When this network is dominant, we feel bright, focused and calm. We are also in the best mode to take full advantage of our ability to rewire our brain levels and networks towards more of what we are striving to be, do, or have!!
We are also much less likely to have uncontrolled inflammation and immune reactivity.
In short, this area being dominant gives us access to focus, wellbeing and energy!!
